The Old Bell

A Perfect Cotswolds Break.....
Welcome to The Old Bell Hotel at Malmesbury – a luxurious Cotswolds hotel with cosy bar, outstanding restaurant and individually designed rooms.

Our historic building, in the shadow of Malmesbury Abbey, hints at our heritage: we are reputed to be the oldest purpose-built hotel in England. Since 1220, The Old Bell Hotel has provided refuge for weary travellers.

Today our guests still find the sanctuary of a quintessential Cotswolds hotel, where old fashioned values include impeccable service, utter comfort and a focus on the pleasures of eating and drinking. Escape to Malmesbury: whether for a coffee and newspaper on our squashy sofas, dinner in our renowned restaurant or a break in one of our classic rooms, a warm Cotswolds welcome awaits.

Close to Bristol, Bath and the M4 junction 17, and on the Southern edge of the Cotswolds, we are ideally placed for a visit to Westonbirt Arboretum and Abbey House Gardens. For more on what to do while you are here, please visit our 'area' page. Throughout the year we play host to guests visiting Gatcombe Park, Highgrove House, and the WOMAD music festival. For details of events and local seasonal activities, please visit our 'area' page.

Bedrooms
With 33 en-suite bedrooms to choose from, the majority of rooms in our main house contain period features and enjoy views looking out towards the front of our historic building. We also have a handful of rooms that are located at the east end of the building which look out towards Malmesbury’s Medieval Abbey and its grounds.

Connected to our main house by a link corridor is The Coach House. These rooms are predominantly standard rooms, 6 of which are ground floor and some have interconnecting room facilities. Rooms in the coach house look over the car park.

A Peaceful Haven
Relax and unwind in either the library, our two lounges or the bar. All are ideal for doing the crossword, playing a board game or simply to have a snooze. Log fires, squashy sofas, cream teas, Sunday papers....

Executive Chef - Tom Rains
Executive Chef Tom Rains arrived in the Cotswolds after a stellar career in some of London's best known eateries, including working for Marco Pierre White, running Anton Mosimann's private dining room in Belgravia and spells at Claridges and the Lygon Arms in Broadway.

Says Tom: “The menu I have put together here at The Old Bell reflects my classical training, balanced with modern simplicity. My dishes encourage individual flavours to shine, yet to complement each other. I have a passion for exciting and original cooking which inspires our guests to try new food experiences, as well as a decent sprinkling of old favourites with a modern twist, for the traditionalists.”

The Old Bell has a well deserved and far-reaching reputation for its award winning food. Our aim is to make Tom's food accessible to all – through casual dining in our brassiere, a la carte eating in our restaurant, and with Tom's Tasting Menu: an ever changing gastronomic journey through flavours, seasons and styles.
